The bomb memorial on Wiener Neustadt's Hauptplatz commemorates the tens of thousands of bombs that severely destroyed large parts of the city during World War II. The monument consists of a broken tree trunk with hammered-in nails, symbolizing both the destructive aerial bombs and the iron will for reconstruction. Erected as part of the city's 750th anniversary celebration in September 1946, Federal President Karl Renner drove the first nail into the wood at that time.
