On July 25, 1870, during the Franco-Prussian War, Ferdinand Graf von Zeppelin, along with eleven other men, was assigned to a reconnaissance patrol in Alsace, France, to determine the enemy's troop strength. He was initially captured by French troops, but managed to escape and reach Palatinate soil near Hirschthal. From there, he continued through the Wegelnburg area to Nothweiler.
A villager helped him water his horse at the well, which is why the well has been named after it ever since.
