This route is best suited for experienced hikers due to its demanding nature and substantial elevation. While cable cars like Palabione and Magnolta can help with parts of the ascent or descent, completing the full loop requires a high level of fitness and proper gear. Make sure you are well-prepared for the distance and the physical challenge before you set out.
The Magnolta - Pasò - Palabione Loop is nestled within the beautiful Parco delle Orobie Valtellinesi, offering a true mountain experience. Keep an eye out for marmot colonies playing near Lago Palabione. From higher vantage points, such as Monte Filone, you can enjoy unique 360° views that sweep across the Orobien and Rhaetian Alps, showcasing the region's impressive natural grandeur.

Embark on a difficult hike to Colle Pasó and Rifugio Valtellina from Aprica, covering 7.6 miles (12.3 km) with a significant 3484 feet (1062 metres) of elevation gain. This challenging route typically takes around 5 hours and 10 minutes to complete. You will traverse varied terrain, from asphalt and unpaved roads to rugged alpine paths, especially beyond Rifugio Valtellina. As you ascend, look out for diverse flora like rhododendrons and edelweiss, and listen for marmots. The trail offers expansive views over the Alps and the Valtellina valley, leading you through verdant landscapes to the panoramic Colle Pasó.
Starting from Aprica, the initial ascent to Rifugio Valtellina can be steep, following path N 327 near the Palabione ski lifts. If you prefer a less strenuous start, you can take a cable car from Magnolta, which leaves you with an easy 40 to 50-minute walk to the Rifugio. Rifugio Valtellina, located at 1920 metres, serves as an ideal resting point, offering a restaurant with local dishes and accommodation.
This route takes you deep into the Orobie Valtellinesi Regional Park, a high-value naturalistic zone. Near Rifugio Valtellina, you can visit the Eco-Faunistic Alpine Observatory, an open-air educational laboratory where you might observe chamois, ibex, deer, and various bird species in their natural habitat. Colle Pasó itself, at 2240 metres, is the highest point within Aprica's municipal territory, providing a truly commanding viewpoint.
