The large North German rivers run in a south/north direction, so that for a long time the transport of goods in an east-west direction was not possible. It was only the Mittelland Canal that created the missing cross-connection between the Dortmund-Ems Canal and the Elbe. Construction began in 1906, the section around Sehnde was built in the 1920s and is now not only a commercial route, but also a popular local recreation area.
