Ore was once mined here. Initially in open-cast mining, later also underground. Therefore, here and there, a spoil tip can be discovered, which has since become overgrown.

The landscape here in the mining forest was reshaped by the mining activities of the mine operators between 1843 and 1976. With open-pit mining ending around 1900. The spoil heaps from underground activities and the sludge ponds left a moonscape that was gradually reclaimed by nature after the mining activities ceased. The hills, valleys, and holes were therefore created by mining activities for ore extraction and not, as Wikipedia claims, by bomb drops.
