I would recommend coming in the evening when the fountains are on. It is a pretty spectacular show!

The "Singing Fountains" - a light-sound-water show - is Yerevan's daily evening event. The square and surrounding streets are crowded until midnight.

The place of the Republic (Armenian հանրապետության հրապարակ Hanrapetutjan Hraparak, Hraparak for short, "Stadtplatz"; until 1991 Leninplatz, Armenian հրապարակ հրապարակ Lenini Hraparak; Russian площадь ленина Pllosschad Lenina) is the central place in Jerevan, the capital of Armenia. The two-part square and the buildings surrounding it were constructed between 1924 and 1977.
