The Colle del Piccolo San Bernardo, at an altitude of 2,188 meters, has connected the Aosta Valley with the French Tarentaise for centuries. Already frequented in pre-Roman times and later crossed by the Via delle Gallie, it still preserves an exceptional historical and archaeological heritage today, including the Cromlech, the Column of Jupiter, and the ancient Hospice.

The Petit Saint-Bernard is a consistently very nice pass with moderate gradients and comparatively very little traffic. If you come from France and continue to Italy, you might be surprised at how French influenced the Italian side is still far to Aosta.

On the border between France and Italy, this 2188-meter-high pass has a long history as a trade route, dating back to the Iron Age. Historians believe that the famous Roman general Hannibal passed through there - with his elephants.
