Construction in the IJ started at the end of the 19th century. Initially, the island was a breakwater for the Oostelijke Handelskade, just like the more easterly KNSM island. It was later expanded with the IJkade and raised with dredged material from the North Sea Canal. The resulting port area was home to the Stoomvaart-Maatschappij Nederland, which operated scheduled services to the Dutch East Indies. After the Second World War, trade in the East virtually came to a standstill in the 1950s as a result of the decolonization of Indonesia.
