The Protestant Church of St. Nicolai was built between 1864 and 1866 on behalf of King Friedrich Wilhelm IV by the architect Friedrich August Stüler in the neo-Romanesque style.
The building replaced the rather simple church that had stood there since 1796 in place of the baroque church that was destroyed in the great city fire (1788) and donated by Electress Louise Henriette of Orange.

The tower of the St. Nicolai Church, which is dedicated to Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of fishermen, boatmen and traders, can be seen from afar. At 57.4 m high, it is the tallest building in the city. From the viewing platform you have an impressive view of the "Green City on the Havel". Here is also the "Gethsemane group" of the Oranienburg sculptor and preacher Wilhelm Groß (1883-1975), which was transferred from the Netherlands to Oranienburg (see also pnn.de/potsdam/das-exil- the-sculptures-has-an-end-wilhelm-big-work-again-in-oranienburg/22265462.html).
