The Charloisse Lagedijk in Rotterdam's Charlois district is 700 years old. The Zuiderkapel from 1910 stands prominently on the dike at number 593. One panel of the exhibition tells about the chapel. In the vestry hang photos of the adventures of the Zuiderkapel community.
The Charlois polder was created after the storm surges of 1373, 1374 and 1375, when the large Riederwaard polder was dammed. The Charloisse Lagedijk formed the outer dike for the new polder. The dike was also called the Smitshoeksedijk, because of the village of Smitshoek, located near Barendrecht.
