Hiking

Herwijnen Castle, or Engelenburg Castle, once stood here. Nothing can be seen of the castle itself now, but the contours of the surrounding terrain are still visible in the landscape. Archaeological excavations have also been carried out regularly in recent years.

Between Gelre and Holland lies a disputed border region in the Middle Ages. From the eleventh century onwards, fortified houses and castles were built by different branches of the Van Arkel family, who sometimes switched sides in the power struggle between Gelre and Holland. Kasteel Engelenburg near Herwijnen is located north of the Waaldijk and is part of this area.

Johan van Herwijnen already owned lands in fief in 1424, which he gradually expanded. In 1468, Gelderland's fief registers mention "a house and an outpost, with its enclosure, called Engelborch".
