Bayerische Motorenwerke AG (BMW) was founded in World War I as an armaments factory. The company emerged from Bayerische Flugzeugwerke AG (BFW). founded on March 7, 1916 and located at today's Lerchenauerstraße 76. The name first appeared in 1917 when Rapp Motorenwerke GmbH was renamed Bayerische Motorenwerke GmbH. BFW bought the engine construction department from this company in 1922. The brand name BMW and the white and blue propeller trademark with two white and two blue fields.
