Anyone in Sneek cannot ignore the iconic water gate. The stone medieval gate with two octagonal towers dominates this picturesque town, which is one of the eleven cities of Friesland. Get off your bike here and stroll over the old ramparts along the picturesque canals.

The Sneker Waterpoort is a water gate over the Hoogendsterpijp in Sneek. The gate consists of two octagonal towers, with a bridge between them over the waterway between De Kolk and the Stadsgracht at the city center, and above the bridge a gatekeeper's house. Sneek had four other water gates and two land gates, all of which have been demolished. The Waterpoort remained and is currently the symbol of Sneek. This symbol can be found, among other things, in the mainsail of the Sneeker skûtsje Sneker Pan, and in the sails and clothing of the Sneeker sailmaker Gaastra.

The water gate used to serve to defend the historic Frisian city of Sneek (or Snits). In the Fries Scheepvaart Museum you can learn about the history of this lock.
