This moderate 8.8-mile (14.2 km) loop tour from Grizzana Morandi to Monte Salvaro takes about 4 hours and 43 minutes to complete, with an elevation gain of 1902 feet (580 metres). You will hike through dense forests, including the Chestnut Woods of Cà di Ruzzone, and enjoy panoramic views of the Reno and Setta valleys as you ascend. The route offers diverse terrain, leading you to the summit of Monte Salvaro at 826 meters above sea level, where you can see the highest Apennine peaks. After the summit, be prepared for a steep descent of about 500 meters. You will also pass the Fienili del Campiaro, historic barns frequently depicted by Giorgio Morandi.

Starting in Grizzana Morandi, this trail largely follows path CAI 100, also known as Via dei Santuari. The descent after Monte Salvaro can be very steep, so take it slowly to protect your knees, especially if the ground is wet. This section is not recommended in case of rain or mud. The overall area is well-regarded by hikers, and the starting point is easily accessible.

This route offers a unique opportunity to experience the landscapes that inspired the famous Italian painter Giorgio Morandi. You can visit his former holiday home in Grizzana Morandi before or after your hike. Reaching the summit of Monte Salvaro provides expansive views of the Bolognese Apennines, and you have the option to take a 100-meter detour to reach the cross at the peak. Towards the end of the loop, you will encounter the beautiful Oratorio di Tudiano, adding a cultural touch to your adventure.
