The Gorham Mountain and Beehive Loop Trail in Acadia National Park delivers a memorable journey through varied landscapes, from the forested slopes of Gorham Mountain to the dramatic, iron-rung ascent of the Beehive. You'll traverse rocky paths and scramble up granite staircases, all while enjoying stunning panoramic views of Sand Beach, Frenchman Bay, and the Atlantic Ocean. The route also takes you past the serene waters of The Bowl, offering a moment of tranquility amidst the adventure.
This moderate to strenuous hike covers 3.6 miles (5.9 km) with an elevation gain of 627 feet (191 metres), typically taking around 1 hour and 55 minutes. Be aware that the Beehive section is a challenging climb, not just a hike, and is best avoided if you have a fear of heights or if the weather is wet. Arrive early to secure parking, especially during busy times, as this is one of Acadia's most popular trails.
What makes this loop truly stand out is its combination of a traditional summit hike on Gorham Mountain with the thrilling, via ferrata-like experience of the Beehive Trail. It's a fantastic way to experience Acadia's iconic coastal mountains and rocky shores, offering a comprehensive overview of the park's diverse beauty in a relatively short timeframe. This trail is a must-do for adventurous hikers seeking a unique challenge and unparalleled vistas.
