Standing at 1,644 feet (501 m), Great Sugar Loaf takes on the appearance of a cone and is quite imposing. Not far from the Irish Sea coast, the views from the top are even more spectacular than the view of the peak itself.
A volcano-esque peak overlooking Ireland’s east coast
Ascending Great Sugar Loaf is quite straightforward, with two main trails to choose from. Immediately south of the mountain is the most popular car park and starting point. From there, it’s a direct ascent of the mountain, on a steep but well-trodden path. Sure-footedness is essential, as the trail gets rockier higher up and you may need your hands to steady yourself.
You can also use the car park on Glencap Road, and approach the summit from the north, a longer but rewarding option. From the summit, you’re treated to fantastic 360-degree views on a clear day. To the east, the Irish Sea unfolds in all its glory. To the west, the Wicklow Mountains rise as green lumps, out of the patchwork landscape. The summit itself is quite wide and rocky, with plenty of space to sit down and soak up the views before heading back down.
Thanks to the straightforward paths, you can ascend Great Sugar Loaf throughout the year but it’s best avoided in adverse weather and strong wind. Sturdy footwear, water and appropriate clothing is essential.
