The Gilpin Lake and Gold Creek Lake loop, known as the Zirkel Circle, is a difficult 10.7-mile (17.2 km) hiking route that immerses you in the diverse beauty of the Mount Zirkel Wilderness. You'll traverse through dense forests, vibrant wildflower meadows, and high alpine terrain, with the highlight being the stunning cobalt blue waters of Gilpin Lake and the peaceful Gold Creek Lake. The trail also features a picturesque 35-foot waterfall and offers views of the rugged Sawtooth Range, making it a truly scenic experience for those up for the challenge.
This popular loop, which takes approximately 5 hours and 25 minutes to complete, begins at the Slavonia Trailhead, which has basic facilities. With 2349 feet (716 metres) of elevation gain, it's a demanding hike, and arriving early is recommended, especially on weekends, to secure parking. Be prepared for potential snow and ice if hiking early in the season, and note that some creek crossings lack bridges, which can be tricky during high water.
The Zirkel Circle is celebrated for its continuous breathtaking scenery, offering a dynamic journey unlike an out-and-back trail. The Mount Zirkel Wilderness is home to various wildlife, including black bears, marmots, and elk, so keep an eye out. Many hikers prefer to tackle the loop counter-clockwise for the best views of the lakes and mountains ahead, despite a significant steep ascent before reaching Gilpin Lake.
