During World War II, Vemork in Rjukan became the center of one of the most important and daring sabotage missions. Heavy water sabotage operations prevented the Nazis from obtaining materials for the construction of atomic bombs.
In the mountains above Rjukan are giant mirrors. These serve to reflect sunlight into the town during the dark winter months.
