The trail offers rewarding alpine vistas, including panoramic views of Lago di Pontechianale and the serene, bog-like Lago Bagnour near the Rifugio.
This hike starts from Castello in Pontechianale, offering generally accessible paths that become steeper as you gain elevation. The trails are well-marked, making navigation straightforward for your day trip. Be aware that in winter, you might need snowshoes or at least crampons for icy sections, so check conditions before you go.
The Bosco dell'Alevè is a UNESCO World Heritage site, making this route particularly special for its unique natural environment. Your journey includes a stop at Rifugio Bagnour, a family-run hut at 2,017 meters known for its warm hospitality and delicious homemade traditional meals like polenta. This area also serves as an excellent starting point for various itineraries, including sections of the renowned Giro del Monviso.

Embark on a moderate hike along the Ancient Swiss Pine Forest Trail to Lago Bagnour (via Route U51), a journey that covers 3.8 miles (6.2 km) with an elevation gain of 1732 feet (528 metres). You can expect to complete this route in about 3 hours. As you hike, you will pass through the ancient Bosco dell'Alevè, where the dark green Swiss stone pines stand out against the pale green larches. The trail is mostly shaded, leading you first to the peaceful Lago Secco, a small lake nestled among the pines, before continuing to the larger Lago Bagnour.
Your adventure begins from Casteldelfino, where you will find a fresh fountain at the parking area in the village. The route is well-marked with many trail signs, making navigation straightforward. You will find another fresh fountain at Rifugio Bagnour, which is a good spot to rest at the end of your hike. This trail offers a consistent experience through varied forest landscapes, ensuring you stay on track and have access to water.
This trail is notable for taking you through the largest area of Swiss stone pines in the entire Alpine arc, with some trees over 500 years old. You will encounter an impressive 18-meter giant Swiss pine near Lago Bagnour, officially recognized as one of Italy's significant trees. The journey concludes at Lago Bagnour itself, where the historic Rifugio Bagnour provides a welcoming stop amidst the lake's unique broken waters, marshlands, and charming wooden bridges.
