The Cuckoo Trail is a 14-mile surfaced path following part of the former railway line from Polegate to Eridge in East Sussex.
Opened in 1880 the 'Cuckoo Line' was named after a local tradition of releasing 'the first cuckoo of Spring' at the annual Heathfied Fair. The line was on a direct route between Eastbourne and London but was axed under the Beeching cuts and eventually closed in 1968.
Today it forms part of the NCN Route 21.

The disused Cuckoo Line railway is now a surfaced and traffic free cycle route, and part of the National Cycle Network Route 21, which runs from Heathfield through Horam, Hellingly, Hailsham, and Polegate to Shinewater Park in Eastbourne. It crosses NCN Route at Polegate.
