Embark on the challenging Monte Cappucciata e Rifugio Ricotta – giro ad anello, a difficult mountain biking route spanning 17.4 miles (27.9 km) with a significant 3351 feet (1021 metres) of elevation gain. Expect to spend around 3 hours and 19 minutes navigating this demanding loop. The trail winds through low mountain environments, utilizing ancient sheep tracks and mule tracks, and offers exceptional panoramic views from Monte Cappucciata of the Gran Sasso massif, Sirente-Velino, and La Majella mountain ranges.
This hard mountain bike ride demands very good fitness and advanced riding skills. You should be prepared for technical sections and rough ground, with brief stretches that might require you to push your bike. Given the demanding nature, ensure you are well-prepared with appropriate gear and hydration before setting out into the Gran Sasso National Park.
What makes this loop trail particularly rewarding is its journey to the Rifugio Ricotta and the unique opportunity it presents to reach a summit by bike. As one of the few trails in the Pescara province allowing mountain bikers to ascend Monte Cappucciata, it offers a truly immersive experience. Beyond the summit, the route showcases picturesque landscapes near Castel del Monte, featuring rolling hills, ancient oak woods, vast plateaus, and glimpses of vineyards and olive groves.
