The OK Slip Falls Trail offers a journey through varied Adirondack forests, starting with boardwalks and moving into mixed woodlands featuring massive white pines and a full canopy. As you approach the highlight, OK Slip Falls, the path descends via switchbacks through hemlocks to spectacular viewing areas overlooking a deep gorge and one of New York's tallest waterfalls.
This moderate 6.5-mile (10.4 km) hike involves 471 feet (144 metres) of elevation gain and typically takes about 2 hours and 48 minutes. While generally well-maintained, expect some wet and muddy sections, so sturdy boots and bug spray are advisable. Always exercise caution at the cliffside viewing areas.
What makes this trail particularly special is its recent accessibility; for 150 years, this area was privately owned. New York State acquired the land in 2013-2015, opening the official trail in 2014 and making this impressive 200-250 foot waterfall, part of the Hudson Gorge Wilderness Area, available to the public for the first time in generations.
