Headstone Viaduct is a breathtaking structure that crosses Monsal Dale. The five-arch bridge, which is 70 feet (21 m) tall at its highest point, affords fine views over the River Wye. Built in 1863 by the Midland Railway, many believed the structure blighted the view upon its completion. These days, however, it is iconic and has Grade II-listed status. The viaduct now carries the Monsal Trail, a traffic-free route for hikers, cyclists, horse riders and wheelchair users.

Great spot for the inner photographer from atop the viaduct. Its sat on the Monsal Trail which runs under the peaks rather than over in parts.

This easy 4.2-mile (6.8 km) route features a gentle 477 feet (145 metres) of elevation gain and typically takes around 1 hour and 54 minutes to complete, passing beneath the impressive Headstone Viaduct.

Ashford-in-the-Water provides an excellent starting point for this hike, with parking readily available in the village for your convenience. If you prefer not to drive, public transport options also connect to this picturesque location. Starting your walk earlier in the day is recommended to fully appreciate the serene atmosphere of Monsal Dale.

Beyond the scenic river walk, you'll have the opportunity to explore Fin Cop, an ancient hillfort that offers magnificent panoramic views over the entire dale. This historical site adds a layer of cultural interest to your outdoor adventure, providing a glimpse into the region's past while you enjoy the natural beauty.
