Legend has it that its name is given by the fact that the pilgrims who came to the chapel left the hat as a votive offering. Other sources explain that it comes from small straw hats that were kept in the chapel and that cured headaches.

It was probably built in the 16th century by the hermit Miquel, from Burgundy, attracted by the legend of Segimon, who gave him the name of Saint Michael.
The barrel nickname comes from straw hats that were stored there, which, according to a belief, would heal headache.
