During the GDR era, the Spanshügel was in the border area, more precisely in the 500 meter restricted area and was not accessible to anyone except the border guards. Logically, the former Landwehr also ran between historical borders. However, this was partially destroyed by the construction of the border. Today the Spanshügel area and with it the former Landwehr are protected.

On the state border near Trappstadt, the Altenburg Castle there and a landwehr fort on the Thuringian side with the Wartberg near Gompertshausen bear witness to the centuries-long border between the two towns.
Unfortunately, only remnants of the landwehr remain here, as the former zone border was recklessly established.
