Embark on the Cirque of the Towers Loop, a difficult hiking route spanning 17.2 miles (27.7 km) with an elevation gain of 1798 feet (548 metres), typically taking around 7 hours and 47 minutes to complete. This challenging trail guides you through the high-altitude wilderness of the Wind River Range, characterized by consistent rolling hills and rocky terrain. You will traverse glacier-cut valleys and extensive boulder-strewn meadows, with the dramatic Cirque itself, featuring towering granite peaks like Pingora and Wolf's Head, providing a spectacular backdrop to your journey.
Planning your visit requires careful consideration, as the entire loop sits above 9,000 feet; acclimatization to the thin air is highly recommended before you begin. Be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions, as snow can persist on the passes until late July or early August, and afternoon thunderstorms are common. While no permits are required for backpacking, you must self-register at the Big Sandy Trailhead, and bear-resistant food storage is mandatory to protect both wildlife and your supplies.
The Cirque of the Towers Loop is widely regarded as one of North America's premier backpacking destinations, offering a truly immersive experience in a remote mountain environment. The route reaches its highest point at 11,500 feet at Texas Pass, which offers panoramic views of the iconic natural amphitheater. This trail provides a profound connection to the rugged beauty and pristine wilderness of Wyoming's Bridger-Teton National Forest, making it a notable adventure for experienced hikers.
