    Hiking

Deep in the heart of the beguiling, often tor-topped, White Mountains is Table Top Mountain. After a stunning drive through the Interior, the hike to its two summits and back is relatively quick but affords stunning views of the surrounding landscape. It's not to be confused with Flattop Mountain near Anchorage, which is Alaska's most ascended summit.

    Table Top Mountain Trail

Embark on the Table Top Mountain Trail, a moderate hike that spans 4.4 miles (7.1 km) and involves a climb of 1064 feet (324 metres). You can expect to complete this route in about 2 hours and 43 minutes. As you ascend, you will pass through regenerating spruce trees, a landscape shaped by a past wildfire, and keep an eye out for wildflowers and berries. The trail offers good views through the less dense forest before you reach the treeless summit of Table Top Mountain, where wide, expansive vistas of the White Mountains and the distant Alaska Range await you.

Plan your visit during the hiking season, which typically runs from late May through late October. Be prepared for potentially muddy and boggy conditions if you hike in spring or after significant rain. Mosquitoes are most active from May to July, so consider bringing repellent during these months. If you are thinking of a winter hike, be aware that road closures might extend your starting point significantly.

This route is a highlight within the White Mountains National Recreation Area, offering a unique perspective on a landscape recovering from wildfire. The distinct treeless summit provides an unobstructed panorama, making it a rewarding destination for those seeking expansive views. It stands out as a trail that combines a manageable challenge with a truly memorable summit experience.
