Carningli Mountain

Hiking

5.0

(33)

Above the charming town of Newport, on the glorious Pembrokeshire coastline, rises a bristly fortress of rock, shrouded in legend and the spectacular site of an ancient and complex hillfort. Historical intrigue, superb views of both coast and upland and an invigorating sense of freedom await you on your hikes to Mynydd Carningli.

In terms of character, Mynydd Carningli occupies the middle ground between the crags that dot the Pembrokeshire coast like ruined, primeval castles and the green, graceful sweep of the Preseli Hills (though the locals proudly name them mountains). It is separated by the main Preseli massif by a wooded valley and its rocky eastern termination towers above Newport.

A Pembrokeshire mini mountain boasting awesome views and a rich history

Like Cadair Idris, legend has it that if you sleep on Mynydd Carningli you either wake up as a poet or go completely mad. Let’s park insanity for a moment and focus instead on why this gorgeous hill might end up as your muse. As the sun sets across the Irish Sea after a wonderful hike to the summit and your only company is semi-wild ponies prancing along its windswept flanks, you’ll soon have plenty of poetic ideations. No wonder the English translation is the Mount of Angels.

Walking routes to Mynydd Carningli most commonly begin from Newport, which makes for a splendid base with plenty of amenities. After a short hike, you’ll arrive at the summit, the site of a Neolithic stronghold. Hut circles and archaic stone ramparts abound, and so impressive is the scale that you soon realise this must have been a place of immense strategic importance.

The view is magnificent, particularly back down to Newport Bay and along the coastline. In the opposite direction rise the twin Preseli domes of Cerrig Lladron and Foel Cwmcerwyn.
