At this location you step through the “Defensieve Dike”. This line, constructed between 1870 and 1880, forms the geographical border between the provinces of East Flanders (Melsele) and Antwerp (Zwijndrecht).
This line dyke ran from Fort Sint-Marie to Fort van Zwijndrecht. The excavation of the earth for the dike led to the formation of a line ditch: the Lange Eind. Two lunettes were constructed in this 'Defensive Dike'. The Put van Fien and, the heritage-protected lunette 'Halve Maan in Beveren'. both were small fortifications between the Brialmont forts of Zwijndrecht and Sint Marie in Kallo.
