    Hiking

The summit of this small hill affords great views of the Aztec sandstone formations that make up the Calico Hills Area. From this point you can see several technical climbing walls including "Panty Wall," which is quite popular because of the dark varnish plates that cover the walls. These plates, also know as "alligator skin," makes great hand and foot holds for climbers.

This 8.0-mile (12.9 km) route, which takes about 3 hours and 55 minutes to complete, offers a diverse landscape. You will gain 1373 feet (418 metres) as you explore sculpted Aztec red sandstone cliffs in Ash Canyon, leading to the surprising oasis of Ash Spring. Further along, discover the beautiful sandstone slabs and ephemeral pools of the Calico Tanks. The trail provides expansive views, including the distant Las Vegas Strip and the majestic La Madre Mountains.

Before you head out, remember that Red Rock Canyon often requires reservations for entry, especially during busy times of the year. It is always a good idea to plan your visit in advance to secure your spot. The best time to hike this loop is typically between October and April. Visiting during winter and early spring is ideal for cooler temperatures and a better chance of seeing water in the tanks.

This route stands out for its unique blend of rugged wilderness and iconic desert features. The Ash Canyon section offers a quieter, less-trafficked experience, allowing you to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the sculpted red rock formations. The transition to the Calico Tanks reveals a different geological wonder, showcasing the artistic steps and ephemeral pools that collect after rainfall. It is a journey that highlights the diverse ecosystems and dramatic scenery of the region.
