The Perpendicular and Razorback Loop offers an easy hiking experience covering 2.6 miles (4.1 km) with an elevation gain of 814 feet (248 metres). You can expect to complete this route in about 1 hour and 31 minutes. As you hike, you will encounter impressive stonework, including over 300 hand-laid granite steps on the Perpendicular Trail, providing a unique terrain as you ascend. While the summit of Mansell Mountain is wooded, you can still catch glimpses of Long Pond through the trees during your climb. The descent via the Razorback Trail also provides views towards Bernard Mountain and the ocean, including Southwest Harbor and the Cranberry Isles.
When planning your visit, it is highly recommended to hike this loop counterclockwise, starting with the Perpendicular Trail. This approach makes climbing the massive stone steps easier than descending them. Be aware that these granite steps can become dangerously slick when wet, so make sure you wear traction-soled boots for safety. This trail is generally not suitable for pets due to its steep sections, numerous stairs, iron rungs, and a ladder, so plan accordingly if you usually hike with your animal companions.
This loop offers a rewarding experience on the 'quiet side' of Mount Desert Island, away from some of the more crowded areas. The trail showcases the historical craftsmanship of the Civilian Conservation Corps, whose stonework remains a prominent feature. This route provides a good balance of physical activity and scenic views, making it a notable option for those looking to explore Acadia National Park's less-traveled paths.
