Initially the village of Goudes was a small port and an industrial site. The first factory was built in 1804 and artificial soda was manufactured there from sulfuric acid. Then in 1854 a lead factory was put into operation (destroyed in 1879 following the crisis in the sector).
In 1875 the industrial potential was such that a tram line was built and in 1891 its final terminus established at Madrague de Montredon.
Thanks to the tramway, some boaters built very basic dwellings there which quickly took the name of “sheds”.
