    Hiking

The western shore of Horseshoe Lake is particularly striking because it cuts very close to a steep, rocky slope. This section of trail along the barren hillside is very different than the rest of the lake, which is surrounded by lush plant life.

The Horseshoe Lake Trail offers a delightful journey through Denali's boreal forests, leading you to a stunning oxbow lake known for its vibrant blue-green waters. You'll navigate a dirt and rock path, including boardwalk sections, with an initial descent to the lake and a gentle, flat loop around its shores. Keep an eye out for the impressive beaver dams and the scenic views of the Nenana River as you complete this easy 4.2-mile (6.8 km) hike.

Planning your visit is straightforward, as the trailhead is conveniently located just over a mile from the Denali National Park entrance. While the route is generally easy, expect a short, steep climb back up from the lake. To maximize your chances of wildlife sightings, especially moose, and to enjoy a more peaceful experience, aim to start your hike in the early morning hours.

This trail is a true gem for wildlife enthusiasts and those seeking a varied landscape without a strenuous effort. It's considered one of the best spots in Denali to observe moose, beavers, and various waterfowl in their natural habitat. The combination of the unique horseshoe-shaped lake, the forest, and the glacial river makes it a high-value experience for its relatively short 1 hour and 51 minutes duration and 370 feet (113 metres) of elevation gain.
