On the night of August 1, 1944, barely a month before liberation, ten people were arrested in Nieuwerkerken during a raid by the German secret police. Joseph Nijns was shot dead on the spot, and the nine others were deported to German camps. Eight of them died in Germany. This monument was erected for them and for Isidoor Bamps, who had been shot dead four months earlier during a resistance operation.
The village was traumatized. After the war, all the residents gathered together to build a large memorial.
