    Hiking

Cerro La Jara Trail is a 1.5-mile loop trail that starts and ends at the Valles Caldera Visitor Center. It circles Cerro La Jara, and there are prairie dogs here who call this land home! Please don't feed the little guys, and be careful when driving because they cross the road often.

The Cerro La Jara Loop offers an easy hiking experience through diverse scenery within Valles Caldera National Preserve. As you circle the park's smallest volcanic dome, you'll enjoy expansive views of the vast Valle Grande, a 13-mile-wide volcanic caldera, and other striking volcanic features like South Mountain. This gentle route covers 2.5 miles (4.0 km) with a minimal elevation gain of 88 feet (27 metres), making it perfect for a quick outing. You can expect to complete the hike in about 1 hour and 1 minute, immersing yourself in the unique landscape. Keep an eye out for the active prairie dog colony you'll pass through, and you might even spot elk or various bird species soaring overhead.

To begin your hike, head to the Welcome Station, which is where the trail starts. Remember that a park entrance fee is required to enter Valles Caldera National Preserve. The trail is accessible year-round, so you can plan your visit whenever suits you best. Pets are welcome on the trail, allowing you to bring your furry companions along. Be aware that some sections on the southwest side can become marshy, especially after spring thaws or during the monsoon season, so plan your footwear accordingly.

This loop is notable for its direct passage through a lively prairie dog colony, offering a unique opportunity to observe these animals up close. The trail provides an excellent introduction to the geological wonders of the Valles Caldera, showcasing the remnants of a massive volcanic eruption. Beyond the prairie dogs, the preserve is home to a variety of wildlife, including elk, which are often seen later in the day, and various raptors like golden eagles and hawks. It's a fantastic way to experience the natural beauty and ecological richness of the area.
