The Oberholtzer Hiking Trail offers a delightful journey through diverse landscapes, from dense forests to cattail-filled wetlands. You'll wander past rocks deposited by ancient glaciers and discover two scenic overlooks, including one providing views of the marshy shoreline of Kabetogama Lake. The trail's initial quarter-mile is a flat, crushed gravel path, making it wheelchair accessible, before transitioning to an uneven dirt path with roots and rocks.
This easy 2.1-mile (3.3 km) hiking loop, with only 32 feet (10 metres) of elevation gain, is perfect for a quick outing, taking about 50 minutes to complete. The trailhead is located conveniently near the Rainy Lake Visitor Center. While the first quarter-mile is pet-friendly, be aware that pets are not allowed on the unpaved sections of the trail to protect local wildlife.
Named after conservationist Ernest Oberholtzer, this trail is a testament to his efforts in preserving the region's wilderness. It's an excellent spot for birdwatching, especially in the wetland areas, and transforms into a beautiful snowshoeing route in winter, with snowshoes often available for free at the visitor center. It's a great option for families and beginners looking for an accessible and scenic experience in Voyageurs National Park.
