Overlook Trail to Redman Lake

The Indian Landing, Coyote Den, and Overlook Trails Loop offers a wonderfully varied hiking experience, taking you from flat, easy paths along Irondequoit Creek to a beautiful wooded gully on the Coyote Den Trail, complete with moss-covered logs and wooden bridges. You'll then encounter a very steep section on the Overlook Loop Trail, making this a dynamic route that keeps things interesting. This moderate 5.1-mile (8.2 km) hike, with 387 feet (118 metres) of elevation gain, typically takes around 2 hours and 13 minutes to complete.

Planning your visit is straightforward; the trail is located in Ellison Park and is generally accessible year-round. Dogs are permitted on leash, so feel free to bring your furry friend along. The paths are a mix of natural surfaces and some paved sections, so sturdy shoes are a good idea. For the best experience, consider hiking in the fall to see the vibrant autumn colors or in the spring for seasonal wildflowers.

Beyond the natural beauty, this loop is rich in history. The Indian Landing Trail passes the presumed site of Peter Schuyler's 1721 Trading Post and the historical "Indian Landing," a significant portage route for the indigenous Iroquois. The Coyote Den Trail even gets its name from a period when an active coyote den was present in the area, adding a layer of local lore to your adventure.
