If you're seeking a rewarding mountain bike ride with expansive views in Yellowstone, the Bunsen Peak Loop Trail delivers. This 10.4-mile (16.7 km) route, rated moderate, winds through diverse terrain from dirt roads to rocky sections, offering glimpses of the dramatic Sheepeater Cliffs and the unique Hoodoos. You'll traverse sagebrush fields and forests, with the landscape constantly changing and providing stunning vistas of Osprey Falls from its overlook and distant mountain ranges.

Plan for a challenging ride with 1365 feet (416 metres) of elevation gain, typically taking about 1 hour and 40 minutes. This is one of the few trails in Yellowstone where mountain biking is allowed, making it a special opportunity. Parking is available at the Bunsen Peak Trailhead, and it's wise to arrive early, especially during peak season, to secure a spot. Be prepared for wildlife encounters, as bison, elk, and bears are common in this area.

The Bunsen Peak Loop offers a unique perspective on Yellowstone National Park, showcasing areas recovering from the 1988 fires and providing panoramic views of iconic features like Golden Gate and Mammoth Hot Springs. It's a strenuous ride best suited for those with good fitness and advanced mountain biking skills, but the unparalleled scenery and the chance to experience the park's backcountry on two wheels make it well worth the effort.
