    Pilot Cove Slate Rock Trail

Embark on the Pilot Cove Slate Rock Trail, a moderate hiking route spanning 8.5 miles (13.8 km) within Pisgah National Forest. You will ascend 1063 feet (324 metres) over an estimated 4 hours, experiencing diverse scenery along the way. The trail follows Slate Rock Creek, where you can enjoy small cascades, lush mosses, and ferns before climbing Slate Rock Ridge, offering glimpses of Slate Rock through the trees.

When planning your hike, be aware that the 1.5-mile section along Forest Road 1206 between trailheads often necessitates a car shuttle. It is wise to check for any seasonal closures or current conditions of Yellow Gap Road (FS 1206), as it can sometimes have potholes. The trail is open throughout the year, and you are welcome to bring your pets, provided they remain on a leash.

This route provides a rewarding outdoor experience, especially if you consider combining it with the Pilot Cove Loop. Doing so allows you to reach the Slate Rock Overlook, which presents expansive views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. This vista is particularly impressive during the fall when the foliage displays its vibrant colors, making it a notable feature of the area.
