The Hogback Ridge Shelter is one of the many maintained sleeping shelters on the Appalachian Trail. There is a privy near the shelter and a water source only a few hundred feet away. This is an excellent picnic site or overnight camping spot. Please follow LNT practices, and don't attract animals to the shelter area by leaving food and trash behind.

This section of the Appalachian Trail from Sam's Gap to Hogback Ridge Shelter offers a taste of the iconic long-distance path without committing to an all-day trek. You'll navigate the "trademark roller coaster up-and-downs" of the AT, winding through shaded treelines and past ancient oak trees, with the promise of expansive long-range views. The highlight is High Rock, a spur trail offering sweeping vistas overlooking Tennessee, making this an easy 2.8-mile (4.5 km) hike with 737 feet (224 metres) of elevation gain, typically taking about 1 hour and 22 minutes.

Parking is readily available at Sam's Gap, making this a convenient option for day hikers, especially those coming from Asheville. While the Hogback Ridge Shelter is a cool feature, note that its water source is a significant walk away, so plan accordingly. Visiting in early spring can enhance the experience, as leafless trees provide even more open views of the surrounding landscape.

This route is a popular choice for those seeking a less crowded alternative to trails along the Blue Ridge Parkway and offers a chance to encounter Appalachian Trail thru-hikers. The trail follows the ridgeline of Peter Cove Mountain, often straddling the North Carolina/Tennessee state line, and you might even spot the Moye Family Monument near Sam's Gap, which marks a land donation.

The Appalachian Trail section from Devil's Fork Gap to Sam's Gap offers a rugged and immersive hiking experience, winding through diverse landscapes from old farmlands to dense rhododendron tunnels. You'll tackle significant elevation changes, including a substantial climb to Lick Rock, which rewards you with views towards Big Bald, and pass through an old apple orchard, adding a touch of historical charm to the natural surroundings. This is a difficult 18.1-mile (29.2 km) route with 3854 feet (1174 metres) of climbing, typically taking over nine hours, making it ideal for seasoned hikers looking for a full day's challenge.

Planning your visit is straightforward, with Sam's Gap providing a convenient trailhead and ample parking directly under the I-26 overpass. While the trail is open year-round, spring and fall offer the most pleasant temperatures and vibrant scenery, avoiding the summer heat and potential winter ice. Always carry plenty of water and be prepared for a long day on the trail, as amenities are scarce along this remote section.

This segment of the Appalachian Trail is notable for its blend of natural beauty and historical markers, including an old barbed wire fence that once delineated the North Carolina and Tennessee state line. You'll also find the Hogback Ridge Shelter, a basic hut just off the main path, which can serve as a useful landmark or a spot for a quick break. The varied terrain and historical elements make this a memorable, if demanding, journey for those seeking a true Appalachian adventure.

This section of the Appalachian Trail from Sam's Gap to Hogback Ridge Shelter offers a classic AT experience, winding through shaded woods and along the ridgeline of Peter Cove Mountain. You'll encounter rocky and rooty terrain, with a mix of steady climbs and descents. The highlight is undoubtedly the panoramic vista from High Rock, providing sweeping views overlooking Tennessee, making the 4.9-mile (7.9 km) out-and-back journey well worth the effort.

To tackle this moderate hike, plan for about 2 hours and 23 minutes of walking time, accounting for the 879 feet (268 metres) of elevation gain. The trailhead at Sam's Gap is easily accessible and offers parking, making it a convenient half-day trip from Asheville. It's best to start earlier in the day, especially during peak season, to ensure parking and enjoy the trail before it gets too busy.

Beyond the scenic views, this trail offers a chance to experience a piece of the iconic Appalachian Trail and potentially meet thru-hikers at the well-maintained Hogback Ridge Shelter. Its proximity to Asheville makes it an excellent alternative to more crowded trails along the Blue Ridge Parkway, providing a rewarding workout and a taste of wilderness in Madison County.
