The original 1938 monument is made of black granite and still stands in Christina State Park in Wilmington, USA. The sculpture on Stenpiren is a bronze copy.
The sculpture depicts the ship Kalmar Nyckel sailing across the sea with its sails hoisted, riding the crest of a wave. Along with the ship Fågel Grip, Kalmar Nyckel was the first Swedish ship to reach the North American east coast. Both Swedish and Finnish colonizers were on board.

The Delaware Monument was created as a gift from Sweden to the American state of Delaware to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the founding of the colony of New Sweden.
The monument describes how the first Swedish colony was founded in 1638 in what are now the American states of Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland. Swedish, Finnish, and Dutch colonizers lived in the colony. In 1655, the Netherlands conquered the colony, and the territory became part of New Netherland.
