    Hiking

Lake Blanche is arguably one of the prettiest destinations in all of the Wasatch Mountains. Keep an eye out for the dramatically notched peak that towers over the lake; once you see it, you'll understand why it's known as the Sundial. You can visit the smaller, nearby lakes Florence and Lillian if you like, but Lake Blanche is the belle of this ball.

    Lake Blanche Trail

    830m

Embark on the Lake Blanche Trail, a difficult 7.0-mile (11.3 km) hike that promises a rewarding journey through Big Cottonwood Canyon. You will ascend through diverse terrain, from shaded forests of scrub oak and aspen to open canyon meadows, before reaching significant quartzite rock formations. The highlight is undoubtedly Lake Blanche itself, nestled in a glacial basin, with the iconic Sundial Peak majestically reflecting in its waters after a challenging 5 hours and 22 minutes of hiking.

Prepare for a consistent and often steep uphill climb, gaining 2718 feet (828 metres) in elevation, with the trail becoming increasingly rocky and exposed as you near the lake. Sturdy hiking shoes are highly recommended to navigate the uneven terrain safely. Be mindful of the altitude, which approaches 9,000 feet at the lake, and consider starting early to allow ample time for this demanding route.

This trail offers a unique glimpse into the geological history of the Wasatch Range, showcasing ancient glacial activity that carved out the basin now holding Lake Blanche. The distinctive quartzite rock formations and boulder slides you encounter along the way are testaments to these powerful natural forces. It's a classic Big Cottonwood Canyon experience, renowned for its dramatic alpine scenery and the striking presence of Sundial Peak.
