The Desert View and Discovery Nature Trail Loop offers a unique hiking experience, transitioning from cool alpine forests to vast desert panoramas. Starting with a paved path from the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway Mountain Station, you'll soon find yourself amidst pines and firs, before the landscape opens up to reveal the stunning Coachella Valley. Keep an eye out for Notch 3, a highlight offering a 120-degree view that truly captures the dramatic elevation drop from Mount San Jacinto.
This easy 1.7-mile (2.7 km) loop, with a gentle 203 feet (62 metres) of elevation gain, takes about 45 minutes to complete, making it ideal for a quick outing. Access is via the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, which whisks you up to the trailhead, bypassing the desert heat for a mountain environment that's often 30-40 degrees Fahrenheit cooler. No permits are needed for the trail itself, but tram tickets are required.
What makes this trail truly stand out is its striking contrast in environments within such a short distance, showcasing both lush mountain and arid desert ecosystems. It's an excellent introduction to the diverse plant and animal life of Mount San Jacinto State Park, providing expansive views of Palm Springs and even the Salton Sea on clear days.
