In 1618, the Defenestration of Prague triggered the Thirty Years' War. The city of Nienburg remained largely spared in the first few years. However, on August 28, 1625, a strong imperial army under the command of Field Marshal Tilly stood before the walls and gates of the city.
3,000 Danes under Colonel Limbach defended the fortress of Nienburg together with the citizens. They successfully repelled all attacks by the imperial forces and even went on the counter-offensive.
