The North Kinsman, South Peak and Cannon Balls Loop Trail is a demanding but incredibly rewarding journey through Franconia Notch State Park. You'll navigate rugged terrain, including steep climbs, rocky sections, and challenging scrambles over the unique Cannonballs. Along the way, the trail offers diverse scenery, from the tranquil waters of Lonesome Lake and Kinsman Pond to the exposed, windy summits providing spectacular 180-degree views of Cannon Mountain and the Franconia Ridge.

This difficult 10.9-mile (17.5 km) loop, with its 3934 feet (1199 metres) of elevation gain, typically takes around 7 hours and 48 minutes, though many hikers find it takes longer. Parking is available at Lafayette Place Campground, a popular trailhead, so an early start is recommended, especially on busy days. Be prepared for potentially wet and muddy sections, and remember that microspikes or snowshoes are crucial if you're tackling this route in colder, icy conditions.

This loop is a prime example of the rugged beauty of the White Mountains, allowing you to summit three New Hampshire 4,000-footers: Cannon Mountain, North Kinsman, and South Kinsman. The route also features the picturesque Lonesome Lake, home to an Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) hut, offering a chance for a brief respite or even an overnight stay during its full-service season. It's a true test of endurance for experienced hikers seeking a memorable adventure.

You'll start with a peaceful walk around Lonesome Lake, complete with boardwalks and reflections of the peaks, before tackling the challenging Hi-Cannon Trail. This path winds through dense, rooty forests, features a unique wooden ladder section, and eventually rewards you with expansive views from exposed rock ledges overlooking Franconia Notch and Mount Lafayette.

This is a difficult 10.1-mile (16.3 km) hike with a substantial 2368 feet (722 metres) of elevation gain, typically taking around 6 hours and 27 minutes. The trailhead is at Lafayette Place Campground, which can fill up quickly, so plan an early start. Be prepared for varied terrain, including steep, rocky sections and potentially slippery conditions during mud season or winter, requiring sturdy footwear and possibly traction.

What makes this route stand out is its combination of tranquil lake scenery and a classic, strenuous mountain climb to Cannon Mountain's summit. The Hi-Cannon Trail is renowned for its direct and challenging ascent, offering a true test of endurance. Embark on the Kinsman Loop via AT and Cascade Brook Trail for a difficult 12.1-mile (19.5 km) hiking adventure through the rugged White Mountains. You will gain 3062 feet (933 metres) of elevation, requiring an estimated 7 hours and 52 minutes to complete. The route offers a diverse landscape, from the serene alpine waters of Lonesome Lake to the impressive cascades of Kinsman Falls. As you ascend, the dense forest opens up to panoramic vistas, revealing views of Cannon Mountain and the Franconia Ridge from the summits of North and South Kinsman. The trail can also become muddy in sections, and brook crossings may be difficult during periods of high water. Always check current weather and trail conditions before you head out to ensure a prepared and enjoyable trip.

This loop is a quintessential White Mountains experience, showcasing the region's dramatic topography and natural beauty. You will encounter an AMC Hut at Lonesome Lake, a popular stop for hikers. The trail's path along Cascade Brook highlights several waterfalls, adding to the scenic variety.
