The Volcano / Cosmic Ashtray offers an easy hiking experience through a landscape often described as alien or Martian. You will traverse vast expanses of slickrock, resembling frozen, melted caramel, with vibrant red and yellow sandstone dominating the views. This 3.2-mile (5.1 km) route involves a gentle ascent of 341 feet (104 metres), taking approximately 1 hour and 23 minutes to complete. Your destination is the Cosmic Ashtray itself, a massive, perfectly round sandstone pit about 50 feet deep and 100 feet wide, featuring a central mound of burnt-orange sand. The panoramic 360-degree views from the sandstone hills leading to this geological wonder are a highlight.
To begin your adventure, head to the Harris Wash Trailhead. While this specific komoot route is rated easy, be aware that other paths to the Cosmic Ashtray can be more challenging due to navigation and varied terrain. There are no natural water sources along the trail, so make sure to bring plenty of water to stay hydrated. Additionally, sun protection is essential given the exposed nature of the landscape. Plan your visit carefully, as the desert environment requires preparation.
