There was already a chapel here in the 16th century, which was renovated in 1720, 1845 and 1855. In 1724, a hermitage was built next to the chapel, where Karel Grimminck lived as a hermit until his death in 1728. The Flemish priest-teacher and linguist Cyriel Moeyaert also lived in 'The old vault'.
A church was built from 1893 to 1894, which was restored in 1906. This church was damaged by a thunderstorm in 1971 and restored in 1972.
