The city of Sandwich is the oldest on Cape Cod. In the contact period, Sandwich was occupied by the Eastern Algonquian speaking Wampanoag who aided the Pilgrims of Plymouth Colony in the 1620.

A lot of old houses remain from that time.

This easy 3.6-mile (5.8 km) hiking route offers a delightful blend of coastal scenery and historical intrigue, with a minimal 43 feet (13 metres) of elevation gain that makes it accessible for nearly everyone. You'll experience the natural beauty of Scusset Beach State Reservation, including the varied terrain of Sagamore Hill, before transitioning to the flat, paved Cape Cod Canal Bikeway. Expect continuous views of the canal and Cape Cod Bay, with opportunities for ship watching and spotting local wildlife, all completed in about 1 hour and 27 minutes.

To begin your adventure, head to Scusset Beach State Reservation, where you'll find parking available. The route is generally family-friendly, though the Sagamore Hill section does include a short, steep climb with stairs. This trail is a great option for a relaxed morning or afternoon outing, and while it's accessible year-round, spring and fall offer comfortable hiking conditions. Always be mindful of potential access fees for the State Reservation.

What truly sets this area apart is its strategic location at the eastern end of the Cape Cod Canal, providing unique perspectives of this significant waterway. Sagamore Hill itself holds historical importance as both a Native American meeting ground and a World War II coastal fortification, with remnants still visible. Beyond hiking, the reservation is popular for fishing, swimming, and birdwatching, making it a versatile destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
