Lace up your jogging shoes for the Butcher Jones Trail, a moderate route that takes you deep into the Sonoran Desert. As you cover its 5.0 miles (8.1 km), you'll encounter a mix of sandy paths and rocky sections, offering a varied workout. The trail climbs 585 feet (178 metres) in elevation, providing continuous panoramic views of Saguaro Lake and the majestic Four Peaks in the distance. You can expect to complete this invigorating jog in about 1 hour and 2 minutes, with plenty of opportunities to pause and take in the vast desert scenery.
Before heading out, remember that a Tonto Pass is necessary for parking at the Butcher Jones Trailhead. Given the desert environment, it's wise to start your jog early in the morning to beat the heat and avoid larger crowds. The route offers very little natural shade, so plan accordingly with sun protection and plenty of water. This timing also allows you to fully enjoy the cooler temperatures and the peaceful desert atmosphere.
This trail is a prime spot to experience the rich biodiversity of the Sonoran Desert. Keep your eyes peeled for iconic saguaro cacti dotting the landscape, alongside other unique desert flora. You might also be fortunate enough to spot local wildlife, such as bighorn sheep or wild horses, especially near the Salt River. The Butcher Jones Trail truly highlights the rugged beauty and vibrant ecosystem of the Tonto National Forest.
