Embark on the Devil's Chasm Trail, a moderate hike that takes you through dramatic forested areas and into a rugged canyon with towering cliffs. This route covers 2.9 miles (4.7 km) and involves a significant climb of 1541 feet (470 metres), typically taking around 2 hours and 8 minutes to complete. You will find the experience challenging yet rewarding as you navigate the varied terrain.
Planning your visit requires some preparation, as cell service is generally unavailable due to the trail's remote location. To reach the trailhead, you will likely need a high-clearance, four-wheel-drive vehicle, especially after navigating the rougher sections of Cherry Creek Road (Forest Road 203). For the most comfortable hiking conditions, consider visiting in spring or fall; summers are extremely hot, and winters can be cold, so an early start is always a good idea.
What truly sets this trail apart is the opportunity to discover remarkably well-preserved Salado Indian cliff dwellings. These ancient structures, dating back to between 1280 and 1350 AD, are subtly integrated into a huge cliff face, offering a unique glimpse into the region's rich history. The blend of natural beauty and historical significance makes the Devil's Chasm Trail a distinctive adventure.
